AppPresser 3: A Whole New Experience

Update: AppPresser 3 launched!

We are excited to announce AppPresser 3!

This release is not just an update, it is a whole new product. We made huge improvements in how you build apps, and how the apps themselves perform.

We’ve been working on this behind the scenes for many months, and I can tell you it’s incredible. Apps are way faster, they feel more native, and they include tons of new features that weren’t possible before.

What’s New? Everything.

This is a whole new platform for building apps with WordPress. You still get all the great WordPress integrations we’ve always had, along with much much more.

The best part is that this is all included in our current pricing, and anyone with an active license gets to use it.

My AppPresser: Your Online App Dashboard

Purchasing AppPresser now includes access to myapppresser.com, which is an online dashboard to create and customize your apps. The My AppPresser dashboard makes it easy to create, customize, and maintain each of your app projects.

You still get our plugins and theme to go on your WordPress site, which help you display your site in the app. The My AppPresser dashboard just makes it easier to create and customize your apps.

A New Visual App Builder

AppPresser 3 includes a brand new visual app builder that makes putting your apps together easier than ever before. It’s easier to customize and add features to your apps, and get instant visual feedback on how it looks.

Faster Performance (by a lot)

We completely rewrote the app files from the ground up, giving you better app performance in every way. Apps load way faster, and pages load quickly with smooth page transitions.

Better Offline Support

AppPresser 2 introduced offline mode, and we perfected it in version 3. Your app loads quickly even when offline, content is cached better, and you can create offline pages more easily.

Custom Pages

Creating non-WordPress pages or offline pages was difficult before, not anymore! Create them easily in the app builder and add them to your app in a few clicks.

Free Push Notifications

Push notifications are easier to setup and more flexible, and now they are included for free! No more visiting a third party provider and paying them a monthly fee.

  • Less messing with code
  • Ionic 2 integration for faster, more native apps
  • Access to build files for custom coding

There are a lot more details on what’s new, but it’s too much for one post. We’ll be writing articles on each major feature in the coming weeks, check back soon for those.

Release

AppPresser 3 is officially in beta, and we will be inviting current AppPresser customers to participate very soon.

We expect the public release date to be in January.

Technical Details

If you are a developer, this is the good stuff 🙂

AppPresser is now powered by Ionic 2, which uses Angular 2 under the hood. It works like a traditional hybrid app where most of the files are embedded on the device for faster loading.

WordPress pages are shown in iFrames, but everything else is API driven. You can create list pages that fetch content through the WP-API, or custom HTML pages that are embedded on the device so they work offline.

The app files are open source, in case you want to create a really custom app or contribute to the project.

My AppPresser was built on WordPress. Building WordPress mobile apps with WordPress is so meta 😉

FAQ

How much does AppPresser 3 cost?

Our pricing has not changed, you can see it here. Current and new customers get access to all the new stuff with an active bundle license. Here are the number of apps you can create in My AppPresser with your license:

Starter Bundle: 1 app
Woo Bundle: 5 Apps
BuddyPress Bundle: 5 apps
Agency Bundle: 25 apps

As long as you have an active license you can access My AppPresser. (Your apps will still work even if you cancel, but some features like push notifications will stop working)

What about current features and extensions?

Most extensions will work the same way, with small modifications. You still get the same BuddyPress & WooCommerce integrations, AppCamera, Geolocation, AppPush, and more.

Can I upgrade from AppPresser 1 or 2?

Yes, you can build your app with AppPresser 3, but you may have to make some modifications. You will have to create the app again with our builder and update your plugins and theme. Modifications to your AppTheme or Ion theme will not transfer to AppPresser 3, because it works differently.

Upgrading is totally worth it, but it’s kind of like starting over if you have heavy modifications to your existing app.

This is so awesome and great to hear. Just to be clear.. Will new purchases as of today have access to Apppresser3 or will we have to wait until January 2017?

  3. Antonis Diamataris on November 15, 2016 at 8:16 am

that’s great news! We were about to release our app after buying last week. Any eta on beta access? We might be able to delay and just go straight to 3!

    • Scott Bolinger on November 15, 2016 at 9:21 am

Hi Antonis, AppPresser 3 is still in beta, so you might not want to delay your launch. We’ll be sending out invitations over the next few weeks.

  6. N on November 15, 2016 at 9:42 am

How will you provide free push services?

    • Scott Bolinger on November 15, 2016 at 11:02 am

We have our own push API now, you can setup everything in the new My AppPresser dashboard. We’ll do a blog post with more details soon, we’ll go over it in the webinar too.

    • N on November 17, 2016 at 10:26 am

Will we be able to have things like rich media and geo fencing like with PW?

It would also be nice if you could set up a UI that would make it easier to define custom notifications based off WordPress events/functions.

  7. mohamed essam on November 15, 2016 at 11:29 am

    I have agency bundle
Do i need to pay more for this new stuff?

    • Scott Bolinger on November 15, 2016 at 12:39 pm

Hi, no you will get access to AppPresser 3 at no extra charge as long as you have an active license 🙂

  8. Quint Rahaman on November 15, 2016 at 11:31 am

Congratulations! I am very much looking forward to taking it for a spin. You mentioned that page loads are faster. On a high level, how is this accomplished? Are you caching the resources one time so that upon subsequent loading of the page, the same resource are not downloaded again?

    • Scott Bolinger on November 15, 2016 at 12:38 pm

Hi Quint, most of the files used to display your content are now embedded on the device so they load instantly. You still have to load WordPress pages, but you have the option to create static pages or use API driven lists as well (which are faster). We are no longer loading all of WordPress into your app, now it’s just the content that you need when you need it.

      I hope that makes sense!

  9. Frank on November 15, 2016 at 12:05 pm

    Hi,
    Great to see.
I have a question about AppBuddy, is it also changed? How does it look like now? Have you updated your PressChat to the new style?
    Thanks
    Frank

  10. Tobias Schulz on November 15, 2016 at 12:36 pm

That sounds great, with apppresser 2 i used a third party push plugin for our Gadgetwelt.de Apps, i am very interested in the new features.

  11. Quincy Rossieau on November 15, 2016 at 11:03 pm

    Hey guys!

Great work. I was looking in to developing in Ionic 2 myself to improve app performance, but it seems you’ve got me covered.

If you can include me in the Beta, that would be great. I am currently using Apppresser 2 in a Mutli-site, BuddyPress environment with Event management and some other features, so a real test!

    • Scott Bolinger on November 16, 2016 at 9:03 am

      Thanks Quincy, will do!

      • Quincy Rossieau on November 17, 2016 at 6:12 am

Great! Are you also including geo-based notifications?

  12. Cathi Bosco on November 16, 2016 at 1:11 am

Sweeet! I can’t wait to try AppPresser 3! Nicely done guys.

  13. Ronny Myksvoll on November 17, 2016 at 5:25 am

Hey this is great news! But I won’t be able to attend the webinar today! Is it possible to log in and watch the webinar later??? Thanks!

    • Scott Bolinger on November 17, 2016 at 8:49 am

Hey Ronny, sure we’ll be posting a recording of it on the blog next week.

  14. Ahmad Awais on November 17, 2016 at 6:11 am

  15. acil kredi on November 17, 2016 at 1:01 pm

    • Scott Bolinger on November 17, 2016 at 1:38 pm

We will have translations in place before the public launch in January.

  16. Quint on November 18, 2016 at 4:14 am

Is there a link to a recording of yesterday’s webinar?

    • Scott Bolinger on November 18, 2016 at 8:38 am

We’ll be posting it here on the blog next week 🙂

  17. Quint on November 21, 2016 at 11:50 am

Nice work on the webinar, guys. Hawkins is everywhere it seems… 😉

Question 1: Can the Splash page play an animation created in After Effects and when finished playing continue to the following page (whether that be Home, etc, etc)? If so, what is the best file type to output the animation from AE?

Question 2: Device orientation. Is Apppresser tracking the device orientation and if so, how can I get to that info so that I can drive the necessary layout changes to my WordPress page depending on orientation? Do you have an example?

Question 3: Device. Is Apppresser tracking specifics regarding device used to access the app? If so, is there an object that I can access that has the data?

    Thanks!

    • Scott Bolinger on November 22, 2016 at 1:02 pm

Hi Quint, no the splash file must be a static png file. This is not our limitation, that’s the only thing Apple/Android allow.

The layout is responsive, so the app will automatically adjust to screen orientation.

If a user logs into WordPress through your app, you can use normal WordPress functions to access user meta, capabilities, etc. This is not specific to our app, it’s the same way it would work on your normal website.

I hope that helps, if you have any more questions feel free to email support.

      Thanks!

  18. Michael Dorchain on November 23, 2016 at 9:03 am

This new version seems to be much more snappy that the current version. The previous version often felt sluggish.
How difficult will it be to use custom templates for the list and posts? How do they get registered in myappresser.com? Hopefully there will be documentation/example on how do add new templates and parse custom endpoints.

I was wondering if I would renew or not since I had an average experience with the version 2.
But unfortunately It seems that I won’t be able to test it before making my subscription renewal decision (December) 🙁

    • Scott Bolinger on November 23, 2016 at 11:52 am

Ya there is a huge increase in performance. We have some documentation here: http://v3docs.apppresser.com/

Happy to send you a beta invite so you can test before your license expires.

      • Michael Dorchain on November 25, 2016 at 1:11 am

Thank you Scott, I received the invite.
I’ll definitely check it out and test it before my license expires.

  19. Dale Reardon on November 24, 2016 at 3:59 am

    Hi,
My BuddyPress setup has BBPress in it as well for the forums. Will this work in the app?
    Dale.

    • Scott Bolinger on November 24, 2016 at 7:08 am

Hi Dale, technically it will work, but we do not have an official integration with BBpress. You will most likely need to make some custom CSS edits to make sure everything looks good on a small screen.

  20. Matt Gray on November 27, 2016 at 8:40 pm

    Hey Scott,

I’ve been watching the video on AppPresser3. We’re about to start a new app this week. Is doesn’t make sense for us to start it now if this new stuff is coming out very shortly, right?

I don’t want to have to rebuild everything from scratch.

    Let me know. Thanks.

    • Scott Bolinger on November 28, 2016 at 6:44 am

Hi Matt, I’d recommend using AppPresser 3. Shoot us an email and we’ll get you a beta invitation.
